Thank You MacKenzie Scott

Home is where the heart is.

New Orleans area Habitat for Humanity celebrates the resiliency and recovery in Jefferson Parish at Habitat’s first home in Lafitte, followed by a seafood boil for the community.

In March 2022, New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity received $4.5 million from American author and philanthropist, MacKenzie Scott. NOAHH’s gift is part of a $436 million gift made by Ms. Scott to Habitat for Humanity International and 83 other Habitat affiliates. This gift of $4.5 million to NOAHH is the largest received in our 38-year history.

“We’re extremely grateful to MacKenzie Scott for her incredible and generous gift. What makes this so extraordinary is that the gifts to Habitat International and our sister affiliates are all unrestricted, meaning each of us is able to decide how best to utilize these funds to address critical housing needs,” said Marguerite Oestreicher, Executive Director of New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity.

New Orleans Habitat has already used some of the funds to purchase the entire block directly behind our main office. The purchase will transform our capacity to build. We now have our own warehouse storage for tools, materials, and ReStore products, a new office space for our growing staff, and secure parking for our vehicles, trailers, and machinery. The donation will substantially help further Habitat’s vision of a world where everyone has equitable access to a safe, decent and affordable place to call home.
