Ways to Recycle, Rebuild and Renew New Orleans

ReStore logo.

The New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore preserves our past by accepting and re-circulating architectural salvage and furniture; it preserves our future by keeping useable building materials out of the waste stream and out of city landfills. We accept new and used building materials, furniture, and appliances donated by the New Orleans community to support the efforts of the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity in our work to build new, affordable homes and eliminate poverty housing in the city.

What a volunteer will find with us:

We are a rag tag team of ReStore Rock Stars who thoroughly enjoy being immersed in the stream of useful materials that come through our doors every day. If you have a love for interesting, useful and forgotten objects, the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore is the place for you. Thrifters, DIY builders and skilled contractors who like working with a wide variety of building materials (both new and with architectural history) will feel right at home. Volunteering at the ReStore is a constant source of inspiration for potential home improvement and creative/conventional construction projects. Because you will work on the front lines, you get to be the first to see what exciting materials are available at our extremely discounted prices.

Whether arranging inventory or inventing merchandising promotions, ReStore volunteers are encouraged to use their own judgment and creativity in contributing to store projects. Sign making and display presentation are two important artistic ways to help out and express yourself imaginatively.

If you’re a handy-person or an avid tinkerer with a love for reviving and/or refurbishing slightly dysfunctional items, your repair skills will be well respected here at the ReStore. Skill sets in the realm of electrical wiring, carpentry and re-upholstery are highly desirable in our line of work, so if you are interested being a specialist that only focuses on one of these areas, your expertise is more than welcome.

Looking for a fun and active way to socialize? We are looking for you! If you are simply a people person, you will find the friendly, laid back family of ReStore staff and customers to be a cheerful and engaging social community of people working together to make New Orleans a better place to live. While we allow all volunteers to move at their own pace, contributing to projects of their choice, our operation will keep you active and even give you a work out if you’re up for the challenge.

While all volunteers are welcome to participate in any capacity, our ReStore Rock Stars will commit to 16 hours of service per a month to be scheduled at your convenience. Volunteers will ideally be able to make their own schedules and stick to them, or be able to contact us at least one day in advance to schedule your service time.

Come out and see how you can contribute to this rewarding operation Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 2900 Elysian Fields, sign up online.  We look forward to meeting you!
