NOAHH to Host AmeriCorps Build-A-Thon in May 2015
NOAHH is happy to announce that the affiliate is hosting the 20th annual AmeriCorps Build-A-Thon May 19 to 30, 2015, to rebuild America St. in New Orleans East. Over 600 current AmeriCorps and alumni, as well as volunteers, Habitat families, and other partners will converge on New Orleans over the course of two weeks for a 10-home blitz build and neighborhood revitalization projects, including A Brush With Kindness.
Today, the 2014-15 class of AmeriCorps was sworn in in a ceremony in New Orleans East by NOAHH executive director Jim Pate. The current NOAHH class is a mix of VISTA and Direct members who serve as integral parts of our Construction, Advancement, and Family Services teams. Over 120 AmeriCorps and 500 NCCCs have served NOAHH since 2005, and our affiliate is proud to be hosting the 2015 Build-A-Thon to celebrate their service to the New Orleans area and the nation. They have formed the backbone of our efforts since the storm, and many have gone on to serve NOAHH as staff or returned to volunteer.
NOAHH welcomes all who want to be a part of this great event in any way. For information on ways to support the Build-A-Thon, contact Avery Strada by phone at 504-861-2077 or by email. Any interested AmeriCorps alumni should look in their inbox for an announcement from Habitat for Humanity International soon!
Build-A-Thon began in 2004 as a way for Habitat for Humanity to both honor the contributions of AmeriCorps to the efforts of Habitat for Humanity and to address the needs of affiliates around the country. The AmeriCorps program began in 1994 and has since contributed 1.2 billion hours of service through 900,000 members, with about 75,000 members per year. AmeriCorps members are part of one of several programs, including VISTA, National Direct, and NCCC, which address community needs in different ways while helping to staff nonprofit, faith-based groups, schools, and public agencies across the United States.
